A day out in Birmingham

On the 30th April and in line with tradition most of the first year apprentices and I had the opportunity to attend the last day of Multimodal at the NEC in Birmingham.

The whole idea of the trip, organised by the HR team, is to give us a chance to see DB Schenker and the industry as a whole from a different perspective and an experience that can’t be seen or taught in the workplace.

Once we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by Carl and Emma from Marketing and Communications who gave us an insight in to the organisation of our 100 square metre stand and the various ways we were utilising our presence at the show.

They also explained how they were capturing the data via tablets and smart phones and how the information was being managed and transferred in to the company CRM system (tWINs) - the whole idea was to have everything as paperless as possible in line with the Group’s DB2020 strategy. As the stand was shared with DB Schenker Rail it was also good to meet some of their team and network with them.

Once we had all finished our introduction, we then visited The British International Freight Association (BIFA) stand where we were given an interesting presentation explaining more about their role within the industry.

Seeing the different exhibitors together really showed the diversity of the industry and to see them all promoting and talking about what they do in different ways really broadened my knowledge and I’m certain it did for the other apprentices too. Some of the apprentices say it was “a great experience” and “an eye opener”, so overall I think that we all benefitted from the day.

Finally, it was also really nice seeing my colleague and second year apprentice Charlie working as part of the stand crew, supporting his development, which he seemed to enjoy. Hopefully some of us will get a similar opportunity in 2016.
